One of my favorite parts about being a wedding planner is getting to really infuse a couple’s personality into their wedding day. From the moment I signed Wendy and Bryan on, I KNEW this was not going to be your typical wedding, for all the right reasons. They emphasized wanting good food, good music, and overall, for their wedding to feel reminiscent of the night they met at a bar on the Lower East Side. Dobbin St in Brooklyn was the perfect place for this.
In Bryan’s words, “As I passed the dance floor, I was blinded by her light. Illuminated beneath a blue disco beam was the most beautiful girl I’d ever seen. I rubbed my eyes. Everything stopped. Everyone else disappeared. She was like an angel, wrapped in an enigma, wrapped in a dress. I could tell she was different. I asked my friends who she was. They replied, “that’s Wendy.”
Pretty tough act to recreate, but I did my best!!
The first thing on the agenda: food. I’m pretty sure the first thing that Wendy said when I asked “What are some must haves at your wedding?” was “Imberico Ham”. Imberico ham is a special type of ham that Wendy tried when her and Bryan visited Spain, and it is her FAVORITE. From there, we worked to create a menu that I can only describe as a full experience.
We had a four course dinner, complete with appetizers, family style entrees, surf and turf, and, of course, 5 different desserts. It’s safe to say guests were well fed. It was important to Wendy and Bryan to have a menu that did justice to their Chinese heritage, and also could bring in influences from their travels. One of my favorite aspects of the evening was the affogato station, where guests were served fresh Vietnamese coffee and a variety of ice cream options. Finally, every guest was presented with a jar of hand crafted chili oil to take home with them for a little *extra spice*.
Aesthetically speaking, we aimed to create a LA meets Brooklyn feel, to honor Bryan’s LA background and Wendy’s Brooklyn background.
Dobbin St Brooklyn was the perfect place to do this. We brought in tons of beautiful, tropical plants and florals courtesy of Joi Blooms, and kept to a light and bright color palette. Gold napkins, cream linens, pops of red, and of course, gorgeous tropical greens made the whole space come to life. One great detail that I loved was their graffiti wall guest book. Bryan told me how much he loved the street art in both LA and Brooklyn, so rather than a coffee table book, they bought a huge canvas, tons of paint markers, and told their guests to tag the canvas. Now, this beautiful piece hangs proudly in their home.
Perhaps my favorite detail of the night, their wedding cake. If you spend more than 5 minutes with Bryan, you will know how much this man loves Prince. So being the incredible fiance she was, Wendy hatched a plan to surprise Bryan with a Prince inspired wedding cake. We played Purple Rain during their cake cutting, and everyone went absolutely wild. As they should.
The love throughout the day was palpable, and it was such an honor to get to bring this day to life for such a great couple. Congratulations Wendy and Bryan, and thank you for being the raddest people I know!
