One of the things I love most about designing weddings is getting to infuse the day with things that make guests so “Wow, that’s SO them.” For Nathali and Peter, this day was EXACTLY that. They fully embraced all of the things that make them, them, and it totally paid off. Let’s dive in to their eclectic, funky, and totally epic 501 Union wedding.
Strength in Nature
When I first onboard clients, I send out a questionnaire that I often love looking back on after the big day. Out of all their very entertaining answers, a few things stuck out to me in particular. The first was their shared love of hexagons. In math, a hexagon is one of the strongest shapes. You can actually see hexagons frequently in nature (think honeycombs, tortoise shells, and snowflakes!). For Nathali and Peter, they resonated with this shape and how it symbolizes a strong bond. Of course, we had to incorporate this shape throughout the day. Their wedding ceremony had a large, hexagon installation where they said “I do”. In the paper goods, we incorporated the shape in subtle patterns. Nathali’s ring is even a black diamond hexagon!
Mixing Aesthetics
It’s normal to come into a wedding with two different aesthetics to blend together. For Peter, he loved dark, modern, neon inspired themes. For Nathali, in her own eloquent words, she was “Morticia Adams meets Hello Kitty”. Needless to say, I had my work cut out for me. When they decided on a 501 Union wedding, naturally we had the dark, moody setting. However, we also had an underlying art deco aesthetic peeking through. We decided to use this as the bridge between the two aesthetics. We mixed Nathali’s whimsical, glamorous vibe with Peter’s black, modern, and neon vision- and threw in some art deco shapes for good measure. This sounds like it could be a disaster waiting to happen, but thankfully we had the dream team to make it all work. Kat at Paper Love Spell really helped mesh these vibes together for the paper goods featured throughout the day. Valen at Blumenhaus flew out from Colorado to bring her floral artistry to NYC. She hand bedazzled flowers and made out of this world magic around the venue!
Special Touches
With a wedding this interesting, we really had to lean into the unexpected and go for it! For a non-traditional bride like Nathali, a regular bouquet wasn’t going to cut it. She is known for carrying a fabulous purse at all times, so we utilized a floral purse bouquet. Peter is a gamer, so Nathali surprised him with a custom video game from Big Day Games. Since Peter is Polish and Nathali is Salvadoran, Jill at Jillicious Foods came up with a custom menu for cocktail hour to infuse both cultures into bite sized nods. The pupusas and pierogis were a huge hit! And once the party got started, they both changed into a second outfit that showed the “true them”. Nathali donned a sparkly fringe mini dress with holographic heels. Peter stole the show a bit with his custom “Nathali” vanity tee and on brand cargo shorts. We ended the night with their favorite desserts, ice cream and mini donuts.
Nathali and Peter, your day was truly one of the coolest, craziest, and most epic days I’ve had the honor of planning. Congratulations to you both and thank you so much for trusting me!
