When Chana and Zach came to me with the notion of a spooky, sultry Halloween weekend wedding, I was immediately hooked. As a Scorpio myself, I have always loved the month of October, and what better way to ring in Spooky Season than with an “I do”? Chana and Zach’s wedding day was a moody, sexy, and vibey reflection of their love, and I loved getting to help plan their 501 Union wedding.
The Little Details
Wedding invitations are the first impression your guests get into your wedding day- and I’m so glad we got to work with Dani at Paper Cliche to design all of the paper goods for Chana and Zach. Chana was really drawn to deckle edge paper, and for good reason. It gives a very romantic, intimate tone- almost like a handwritten love letter. We carried this same texture into the table numbers to nod back to the first paper guests received.
Zach works as an artist, so we incorporated his artwork into the bar signs with illustrations of their signature drinks. We also added in custom cocktail napkins and the groomsmen’s socks with his very own designs! One of my favorite personal touches of the day had to do with the boutonnieres. Each of the groomsmen had a single flower boutonniere, and Zach’s pocket square incorporated each of the groomsmen’s flowers. He wanted a way to show off how all of his friends have made him who he is today, and I loved this symbolism so much.
We toured a number of venues around Brooklyn, but the moment we stepped into 501 Union, all bets were off. The moody black interiors with an art deco flair were the PERFECT setting for their nuptials. A 501 Union wedding was a match made in heaven! We used the space to influence a lot of design decisions, including utilizing the dark atmosphere to our advantage. Nothing screams spooky and sultry more than candlelight, so we brought in black linens black paper menus, and black candlesticks to make the ambient light really shine. To contrast, Olivia Howard brought in the most stunning burgundy, green, and blush flowers with anemone accents. Then, in the ceremony space, she designed a chuppah with gorgeous draping flowers all over. The theme continued in the reception, with a beautiful skylight installation of greenery and hanging amaranthus.
Guest Experience
From the beginning, Chana and Zach kept their guest experience at top of mind. For a unique musical moment, we had a DJ fusion- featuring DJ Allison Kinney and The Shaghorns. A brass band accompanying the DJ made for a really fun and upbeat party! They made a custom arrangement for the Hora, and played some epic renditions of their favorite songs throughout the night. Guests loved having an interactive music component while not being limited to a set list of a typical wedding band. Finally, the party ended with the Shaghorns on the dance floor playing, “Last Dance”, which felt kismet for these disco lovers.
Congratulations Chana and Zach!! It was such a joy getting to work with you to plan this spooky, vibey celebration.
